The story plunged me into a colorful cast of complex characters enmeshed in a plot that kept my interest to the end. What I admired in particular is the skillful way the author incorporates the WW II history of Aruba. I also liked the story's alternate perspectives between the adventurous but naive girl Alissia and the questioning adult she becomes. Because Alissia wrestles with guilt over her past misdeeds and questions the legacy of war on the island, she must return to Aruba for answers. The story's tension keeps building. References to Alice in Wonderland that are woven into the story give it an added dimension.
